Bernese Mountain Dog Portrait. Pet portrait painting on canvas panel, by Andreea Dumez

Pet Portraits

When I paint a portrait, I follow the invisible emotion that arises as I study my subject. I create portraits, but I paint emotions. Each animal has a character, a personality – I would say an “aura” that they emanate. The backgrounds for my portraits aim to evoke that energy. Sometimes subtle, other times more complex, the fluid backgrounds complement the animal’s color palette and personality.
If you would like me to paint a portrait of your beloved animal (cat, dog, parakeet, horse, hamster, lizard or any other beloved companion!), please read the FAQs below:

How much would a portrait of my pet cost?
My rates start at $200 (unframed), with size of the painting and number of pets being factored in.

Can I send you my own photos of my pet?
Yes, I’m open to using owner’s photos (although I prefer taking my own photos if you live within driving range from me). I require clear, good photos, preferably taken under natural light.
Sending me more photos is always better, as I can see the animal from different angles. Occasionally, I may e-mail you back with detailed directions for additional angles or a specific lighting. Let me know if you have a specific photo to be used as the main reference.
If you have photos taken by a professional photographer, I require their written permission to use them.

What if my pet has passed away?
This situation is always heartbreaking and I want to do your pet justice with a beautiful portrait. Depending on the quality of the pictures, I can work on creating a portrait, but note that I may not always be able to, especially if the photos are not clear enough or the angles are not suitable for a portrait.

How long does it take you to complete my pet’s portrait?
It takes me anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to complete a portrait, depending on the size, complexity, and the waiting list. For this reason, if you are considering a portrait for a gift, take this time into account, plus shipping time. As a solution, I can send you a “work in progress” certificate or image, as a temporary gift.

Can you paint in the style of… (insert another artist name)?
No. As an artist, I maintain and respect my own style, and I will not paint in someone else’s style.

How does it work?
1. Send me the photos of your pet. Also, please tell me a little about the animal(s) I’m painting – their name, their favorite toy, a story about them, how you got them, a little something to give me more clues about their personality.
Email this information to me at andy@andreeadumez.com (or use this contact page if you have further questions).
2. Follow the link below to select the size of the portrait and purchase the painting:
